Vincenzo Panormo Double Bass
Master craftsman Vincenzo Panormo is celebrated as one of the world's most accomplished makers of double bass instruments. In Paris, at the height of his career, he produced two remarkable instruments, the superior of which has survived. Paul Gentile was privileged to have access to this famed Panormo double bass for a six-month period. This instrument, lovingly recreated by Gentile, is considered to be the finest bass ever made.

Working in 1/7th scale with traditional instrument-making techniques, Gentile re-created the double-bass' unique character using ebony, maple, spruce, Mexican rosewood and brass. He carved the belly and back of the instrument by hand to achieve the refined symmetry of the original.

He meticulously duplicated the bass' inlaid triple purfling ornamental border of dyed pear wood and maple. Gentile even recreated the identical markings which have appeared on the original finish from time and use, and installed a tiny sound post which is seen through the F-hole.

Gentile spent six months completing the Panormo Double Bass. There are 82 components in the bass, and the smallest pieces of laminate in the inlay are the thickness of paper. The bass can even be played if you are really skilled with a bow. It does not articulate perfectly due to its small size.
